X is a public square: an algorithm ranks it, strangers pile into the replies, ads chase you around, and your posts are feedstock for Grok. Badger is the opposite by design — a private, end-to-end encrypted social feed built only from people you invited. No algorithm, no strangers, no AI reading your posts. Just your circle, in chronological order.
| Badger | X / Twitter | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can see your posts | Only people you invited | The public internet, by default |
| End-to-end encrypted | Yes — posts, chats and media | No — posts are public; encrypted DMs are limited |
| Your posts train an AI | No — they're encrypted; we can't read them | Yes — used to train Grok / xAI |
| Algorithm deciding what you see | No — chronological, from your contacts | Yes — ranked for engagement |
| Ads targeted on your behaviour | No — non-personalised, and removable | Yes — the business model |
| Strangers in your replies | No — invited circle only | Yes — anyone, by default |
| Built from your real contacts | Yes | Follow anyone; be found by anyone |
| Moods, status & an optional shared map | Yes | No |
On X, anyone can find you, quote you, and land in your mentions. On Badger you can't be searched for, listed, or stumbled upon — every person you see is someone you chose. It's the difference between shouting in a square and talking in your own front room.
There's no engagement algorithm in Badger because there's nothing to optimise — no ads to sell against your attention, no strangers to surface. Your feed is simply the people you chose, most recent first. Calm instead of frantic; yours instead of tuned.
X uses what you post to train Grok. Badger can't — your posts and messages are end-to-end encrypted, so there's nothing for us or anyone else to feed a model with. Privacy that's enforced by mathematics, not by a policy you have to trust.
Want the receipts on who trains on your data, and how? That's what the manifesto is for.
If you want to broadcast to the world, X will always do that better — that's what a public square is for. Badger is for the other half of your life: the people you actually know, somewhere private enough to be yourself. You can keep both. Most people do.
